Drew Nelson, MA, LCMHCA

Psychotherapist
In-person at Midtown Location, Telehealth option provided for NC Residents

Drew’s experience centers around working with individuals across the lifespan in nonprofit agency settings, using play therapy, activity-based therapy, and talk therapy to address areas including anxiety, adoption, ADHD, behavioral challenges, depression, grief and loss, life transitions, parental separation and divorce, parenting, self-esteem, self-identity, and trauma.

He practices from a person-centered, developmentally-informed, trauma-informed, and attachment-based counseling approach, believing that all humans have the capacity to grow and heal. Drew believes that we are all naturally oriented towards doing the best we can with the resources that are available to us, and that we sometimes lose our way, becoming disoriented. It is often within relationships that we reorient and find our way back home.

With genuineness, empathic understanding, and radical acceptance, Drew aims to build a safe, secure, and nurturing relationship that facilitates the reorientation and development of all clients – young and old. As such, he primarily utilizes Child-Centered Play Therapy (CCPT) when working with children between the ages of 3 and 10, and person-centered therapy (PCT) when working with adolescents and adults. With parents and caregivers, Drew incorporates developmentally appropriate strategies to support the entire family system.

Drew is a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor Associate. He earned his Master of Arts degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Midwestern State University, where he discovered his passion for play therapy. To further his education, Drew received specialty training in Child Centered Play Therapy (CCPT) through the Center for Play Therapy at the University of North Texas, recognized internationally for its leadership in play therapy training and research. In addition to being a Certified Trust Based Relational Intervention (TBRIⓇ) Practitioner, he is actively pursuing Registered Play Therapist (RPT) and CCPT Practitioner certifications.

On a personal level, Drew never stops singing, humming, or tapping his feet to the rhythm of life. He loves to do just about anything outside, especially if it means being with his family, close friends, and/or fur babies. In all aspects of his life, he is guided by Fred Rogers’ quote: “I don’t think anyone can grow unless he’s loved exactly as he is now, appreciated for what he is rather than what he will be.”
