The Best Retreat.

By: Kimberly Whalen, MA, LMFT

Have you ever sat still with yourself then quickly wanting to escape the silence? We’ve been conditioned, desensitized, and dependent on external chaos. Life becomes like a simulator program. Trying to keep up the pace leaves us overwhelmed, detached, and numb. In working with couples, I often recommend they take one day per week to check-in with one another. This simple act of support makes them feel valued.

What if we spent just 10 to 15 minutes per day checking in with ourselves? This concept is offered by the Calm app, which allows you to check-in with your mental, emotional, and physical well-being. Though it may sound like an elementary task, listening to your subconscious may give way to emerging patterns, which could be the start of your own self-discovery journey.

For example, you may realize a shift in your mood after taking a daily walk. It begins with asking your subconscious the question, “What can I learn about myself today?” Don’t be surprised if a specific memory, experience, or person comes to your mind.

Take a curious stance with what surfaces and see where it takes you. What emotions are associated with that memory, experience, or person? What is your subconscious trying to teach you about yourself by releasing this thought to your conscious? Spring is a season of beautiful transformation and growth. We are meant to evolve. Let’s place value on ourselves, seek inner peace/serenity, and enjoy our unique self-discovery journey.

As stated by Marcus Aurelius, “For nowhere can you find a more peaceful and less busy retreat than in your own soul - especially if on close inspection it is filled with ease, which I say is nothing more than being well-ordered. Treat yourself often to this retreat and be renewed.” ~ Marcus Aurelius, Meditations, 4.3.1
